Publications of Prof. A. Basden

My publishing strategy has been to publish one or two good papers in each area, rather than attempt to generate many on a single topic. This is because I have a wide range of ideas and wish to ensure public exposure of as many as possible. I have taken the liberty of including publications from outside my formal areas of work, because they show external and interdisciplinary influences that have given flavour to my main research through the years. For books, chapters and refereed journal papers I indicate which are the significant publications and why.

* marks a significant contribution.

3.1 Books

3.1.1 Already published

Basden, A, Eriksson D, Strijbos, A. (2009). The Problem of System Improvement: Proceedings of the 13th and 14th Annual Working Conference of the CPTS. Maarssen, Netherlands. ISBN: 978-90-807718-6-4.

* Basden A. (2008) Philosophical Frameworks for Understanding Information Systems. Hershey, PA, USA: IGI Global (IDEA Group Inc.). ISBN: 978-1-59904-036-3.

This is a major monograph which contains a significant amount of original thought. While, like to some other works, it attempts to apply philosophy to understanding information systems, it is original in several ways. It argues for a lifeworld-oriented approach to understanding IS. It argues for a need to understand the 'whole story' that is IS, of which five main areas of research and practice are delineated. It introduces the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd as uniquely able to address all the areas, and may be seen as a reference introduction to Dooyeweerd. It systematically formulates frameworks for understanding each of the five main areas:

In doing so, it reinterprets the areas and generates both new insights and new practical tools for research and practice.

* Strijbos S, Basden A, eds. (2006). In Search of an Integrative Vision of Technology: Interdisciplinary Studies in Information Systems. Kluwer/Springer, Contemporary Systems Thinking Series.

This is a collection of updated versions of selected papers that have arisen from the annual conferences of the Centre for Philosophy, Technology and Social Systems, which have been published in refereed academic journals. Its main contribution is to bring together papers on information technology, methodology, use, ethics and strategic direction into a coherent 'integrative vision'.

A book with two purposes: to explain the new technology to surveyors, and to act as the report on the RICS/Alvey ELSIE project.

3.1.2 In preparation

Basden A. "The Reality of Social Construction". Book to form a triad with Berger and Luckmann's 'The Social Construction of Reality' and Searle's 'The Construction of Social Reality', in which it is argued that the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd, based on radically different presuppositions, can bridge the the polar opposition of social construction and positivism as exhibited in the other two books.

3.11 Major Web Sites

I include in this section the web sites for which I am responsible, whether or not their content concerns my main research. The reason for doing so is that each provides different types of experience in web site design.

1996 - present: "The Dooyeweerd Pages". This is a growing website whose purpose is to provide a forum for understanding and debating the philosophical framework of Herman Dooyeweerd (1955). Its major component is a set of closely interlinked web pages which present the major themes of his framework, explain them in non-philosophical language, and invite debate about those themes; the results of such debate is fed back into the website in order to clarify issues that arise. In addition, the website contains discussion on the relevance of Dooyeweerdian philosophy to e.g. information systems, on how Dooyeweerd's approach compares with that of other thinkers (such as Habermas, Heidegger, Polanyi), on the background to Dooyeweerd's thought, including a portrait of the man himself, and links to other relevant websites. The whole site is growing continually, and is now a significant resource to the worldwide Dooyeweerdian community. It is being translated into Portugese for a Brazilian readership. URL: http://www.dooy.info/.

1999 - present: "The Istar Knowledge Server". This site explains the Istar KBS and cognitive mapping toolkit, and also provides portals to the Istar Knowledge Server that is currently running half a dozen knowledge bases. This is the demonstration site, whose purpose is to expound the ideas of knowledge service and stimulate discussion of its potential. URL: http://www.basden.salford.ac.uk/pgm/Istar/.html

1998 - present: "A Brief History of God". This is designed to provide a cross-cultural view of how God has been active in the history of the Earth and what 'large' messages he has revealed via such activity. It is innovative in eschewing both theologically fundamentalist and liberal perspectives, and seeking to provide an overall picture against which spiritual phenomena can be evaluated. The experience this web site provides is of explaining concepts across cultures, and of addressing some delicate issues that can raise fierce reactions. URL: http://www.abxn.org/bhg/

2002 - present: "A New View in Theology and Practice". An evolving attempt to develop a theology that is commensurate with environmental responsibility, not just as an add-on but as central. URL: http://www.abxn.org/nv/
